Chania
Chania is Crete's second city, which also gives it's name to the surrounding prefecture, or county. The city itself is geographically small, and divided roughly into two parts - the old, dating from historical Venetian and Turkish occupation, and the new, where the bustling day to day business of Chania's inhabitants is carried out. The old town boasts an extremely pictureseque Venetian harbour and lighthouse which is the perfect place to watch the world go by after a long day at the beach.
Hotels in Chania tend to be concentrated west of the city, dotted along the long stretch of beach which extends all along the north west coastline. In this area, the tourist village of Platanias is lively and busy, whilst in quieter resorts such as Kolymbari and Maleme, long sunny days go by at an unhurried pace.

Rethymno
Rethymno is a smaller city than Chania, but has much of it's charm. There is an old town, constructed largely by the Venetians and the Turkish, and an attractive old harbour and lighthouse. The whole town is dominated by the 'fortezza', a massive stone fort which is open to the public and affords fantastic views over the town, surrounding countryside to the White Mountains, and over the deep blue Mediterranean sea.
